University Secretary
The University Secretary’s Office, established under Section 33 of the Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act, plays a crucial role at St. Peter’s University. Appointed by the University Council based on the Appointments Board’s recommendation, the University Secretary oversees a wide range of responsibilities, including general administration, the custody of the university seal, and asset management. As Secretary to the University Council and the institution’s Accounting Officer, the University Secretary also functions as the Corporate/Company Secretary, ensuring the smooth operation of university governance and compliance.
In addition to these duties, the University Secretary coordinates legal services to protect the University’s legal interests, working closely with external legal providers. The office is central to maintaining the institution’s regulatory and legal framework, providing essential support and advice to the Council, executive leadership, and other university departments, thereby upholding the standards of governance and operational effectiveness.
Role & Responsibilities
The University Secretary’s role is outlined in Section 33 of the Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act. This position involves overseeing general administration, asset management, and serving as the Secretary to the University Council. The Secretary is also the institution’s Accounting Officer and acts as the Corporate/Company Secretary, ensuring effective governance and adherence to legal and regulatory requirements.
General Administration
The University Secretary manages the University’s administrative functions, including the custody of the University seal and oversight of asset management. This role ensures smooth operation of the University’s governance structures, providing essential support to the University Council and coordinating internal administrative processes.
Legal Services and Compliance
In addition to coordinating legal services, the University Secretary works with external legal providers to protect the University’s legal interests. Responsibilities include managing compliance with public interest governance principles, overseeing data protection and freedom of information, and supporting the development and implementation of policies and regulations.
Coordination and Communication
The office plays a crucial role in coordinating sector consultations and influencing higher education policy development. It manages communication with regulatory bodies, ensuring the University’s compliance with registration conditions and advising on strategic governance issues. The Secretary also oversees the University’s response to legal and regulatory challenges.
