The University Secretary’s Office, established under Section 33 of the Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act, plays a crucial role at St. Peter’s University. Appointed by the University Council based on the Appointments Board’s recommendation, the University Secretary oversees a wide range of responsibilities, including general administration, the custody of the university seal, and asset management. As Secretary to the University Council and the institution’s Accounting Officer, the University Secretary also functions as the Corporate/Company Secretary, ensuring the smooth operation of university governance and compliance.

In addition to these duties, the University Secretary coordinates legal services to protect the University’s legal interests, working closely with external legal providers. The office is central to maintaining the institution’s regulatory and legal framework, providing essential support and advice to the Council, executive leadership, and other university departments, thereby upholding the standards of governance and operational effectiveness.

Role & Responsibilities

Mandate
The University Secretary’s role is outlined in Section 33 of the Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act. This position involves overseeing the general administration, asset management, and serving as Secretary to the University Council. The University Secretary also serves as the institution’s Accounting Officer and acts as the Corporate/Company Secretary, ensuring effective governance and compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.

General Administration
The University Secretary manages the institution’s administrative functions, including the safeguarding of the University seal and overseeing asset management. This role ensures the smooth operation of the university’s governance structures, providing essential support to the University Council and coordinating internal administrative processes to uphold operational efficiency.

Legal Services and Compliance
The University Secretary is responsible for coordinating legal services, working closely with external legal providers to protect the university’s legal interests. The role includes managing compliance with public interest governance principles, overseeing data protection, ensuring freedom of information regulations are met, and supporting the development and implementation of policies and regulations that align with legal and ethical standards.

Coordination and Communication
The office plays a key role in coordinating sector consultations and influencing the development of higher education policy.
